Our Performance Spaces for the 2018-19 Season

While YMTC continues the search for our own performance space, we still must rent theaters each season which can accommodate the full scope of the musical theater we produce, as well as our growing audiences. Performing in different venues also provides the young artists and technical theater students the experience of working in different settings.

We enjoyed having our full 2017-18 season at the El Cerrito High School Performing Arts Theater. This is unusual, however, and for our 2018-19 season, we will feature performances in two venues, both walking distance from BART Stations.

Bat Boy: The Musical (December 2018) will perform at The Malonga Casquelourd Center for the Arts, 1428 Alice St., Oakland, a consistent performance space for YMTC since our summer 2013 production of Sweeney Todd. The black box theater, which seats up to 300, is versatile, and provides our performers with with a more intimate relationship with the audience. Audiences also admire the beautiful architecture of the spacious lobby area for enjoying concessions and socializing before the show and at intermission. Walking distance from 12th St. BART.

YMTC audiences might remember seeing our past performances at the Malonga Center of Sunday in the Park with George, Cabaret, Don’t Stop Me (World Premiere composed by Dave Malloy), Company, and Spring Awakening.

A Man of No Importance (March 2019) and Les Misérables (July 2019) will perform at The El Cerrito High School Performing Arts Theater – a beautiful, state of the art theater well-suited to large-scale productions, with seating for over 450 patrons on the orchestra level. As the theater is operated by the school district, student and district events are calendar priorities, and it is not always possible in their schedule to accommodate our productions. Walking distance from El Cerrito Plaza BART.

Our first show at ECHS was West Side Story in the summer of 2012. Subsequent productions include South Pacific, Fiddler on the Roof, Carousel, Into the Woods, The Most Happy Fella, Guys & Dolls, A Chorus Line and, in July 2018, Jason Robert Brown’s Parade.
